American Airlines intends, within the next 18 months, to complete the construction of a large maintenance hangar at the São Paulo International Airport, GRU Airport. The work, estimated at more than US $ 100 million, will occupy an area of ??17 thousand square meters.
The new structure, which will be erected at the site of the skeleton of the VASP hangar (which has never been removed from the paper), will be able to simultaneously serve two Boeing 777-300ERs, most commonly used by the US company on routes between São Paulo and the United States.
The hangar will serve for heavy aircraft maintenance - including service to third parties - storage of parts and materials and training area for human resources.
The site, which is already being prepared for the beginning of the works, is located next to the remote parking courtyard, called the Lima courtyard or patio 9.
In August 2015, LATAM even announced a similar initiative , however the subject did not go as expected and the project seems to be on hold.
Scheme (1, 2 and 3) details the location of future installations.
Despite the economic crisis and heavy political climate in our country, company spokesman Josh Freed confirmed to Reuters that American plans to invest in this structure and details will be announced shortly.
